PROJECT BACCHAE

Performance / Ensemble / 120 min A durational ritual inspired by Euripides’ Bacchae

PROJECT BACCHAE

Performance Project / SOLO Performance

Short Introduction

Bacchae is an ensemble performance inspired by Euripides’ tragedy, conceived as an extended contemporary ritual.
Rather than a theatrical adaptation, the work unfolds as a durational experience that examines collective ecstasy, violence and transformation through the body.

The performance approaches the chorus as a living organism, where individual identity gradually dissolves into a shared physical and emotional state.

Concept & Artistic Statement

At the core of Bacchae lies an exploration of surrender.
The performers engage in repetitive actions, rhythmic patterns and physical endurance, allowing the body to move beyond representation and into altered states.

Drawing from the Dionysian myth, the work investigates intoxication not as excess, but as a political and bodily condition — a rupture from imposed order. Control, hierarchy and individuality are slowly eroded, giving way to instinct, communion and inevitable violence.

The stage becomes a ritual field where devotion and destruction coexist.

What the Audience Experiences

The audience is immersed in a slow-burning transformation.
Time expands, attention shifts, and perception becomes unstable as the performers’ bodies accumulate fatigue and intensity.

Rather than observing a narrative, spectators witness a collective passage: from structure to chaos, from restraint to release. The durational aspect invites contemplation, discomfort and heightened awareness.
